Sunoco I (?)

I started this painting for a show about trees, and I took the original photo last fall at Scarsilloni's Sunoco station in Scituate, MA with this in mind. I began this painting and it never felt quite right, so I never really finished it and submitted different one instead. I do like this in spite of a few issues I have with it, one of them being that the entire time I was painting it, I felt like it needed to be larger. This one is a strange size...somewhere in the range of 13'x 17" or so...not sure where I got the canvas...but I'm thinking of trying it again only much bigger....I would like to see what happens to the technique since I prefer to use big brushes, could be interesting.

Nice one. I much prefer to paint with big brushes on a bigger canvas myself; your arm feels freer for one thing. I'm glad to see you including size info, I have wondered about the size of your other paintings shown on this blog. Because I'm nosy. :) And speaking of info... prices? hmmm?

I think it looks great.
Oh how I wish I could choose such great composition.

I think it would be awesome - and I'd love to see it! This is wonderful, though.... I can't wait to see what you submitted!

OK, Blogger's acting weird - I already posted a comment on this, but it got hung up, and I don't know where it went, apologies if it shows up later! I like this one, and can't wait to see what you submitted for "Trees"... this one is beautiful and I would think it would be great on a larger scale (Blick Sale....).

Maybe you're being a little hard on yourself Paula because I really REALLY like this. The juxtaposition of the warm fall leaves and the cold blue metal overhand is great. I also would like to see it bigger because then you can show off those wonderful brushstrokes of yours.

When I first looked at this painting I thought that a Sunoco station never looked so good! The colors of the leaves are wonderful! I'd also love to see your large version if you decide to paint it!

Love the contrasting colors and the darks of the branches and the wires...
Very very interesting. Looking forward to seeing what you do with Sunoco II.

Thanks Camille, I have found that I love the freedom of painting large, my previous painting (that I have not posted yet) is 30"x30" and I loved working in that range. There can be very big difference in the amount of paint used for larger sizes though...I needed to buy it in jars!

Thanks Trevor! You do choose great composition, that's what I like about art and artists...we all have a different perspective! (Mine is making me understand a little more on why it was easier to know where all the cracks in the wall were in the classroom instead of what may have been on the board!)

Kelley...Blick Sale it is! I got my postcard the other day and was VERY excited...I did well at their Sept. canvas sale!

Thanks Sheila for visiting my blog and for your observations! I am definitely trying to determine what the best size for the larger piece will be...I'm thinking it will need to be proportionate to the original, but, hmmm...maybe not!

Manon, what it is about commercial signage? I guess because I studied design at art school, I am aware of the art that goes into corporate marks, then when I consider the typical surroundings, fall foliage in this case, an urban backdrop in another...sometimes, it does look pretty good..other times, it can ruin a landscape!

Marian, I am also looking forward to seeing where Sunoco II goes...we'll see! (And congrats on your show!!! Wish a x-country trip were a little easier!)

Yes, very nice. It defintely would be great in a larger format. I would choose between the trees or the sign being the focal point. Maybe make one of them a little less prominent. Can't wait to see this again.

I love your trees - just enough color and I loved seeing your palette in the winter picture!

Thanks for your feedback Peggi. It will be interesting to me to see how it does develop and translate to a larger size.

Odd Chick also nice to hear from you, thank you ladies for visiting!
